The upcoming Republican presidential debate at Oakland University on Nov. 9, which will be broadcast on CNBC, has brought out the hate merchants targeting Mitt Romney and the Mormon church.
One email I received said that CNBC and OU should realize that the former governor believes that he will become a “god” in the afterlife, that Satan is Jesus’ brother, and that the Mormon prophet will drive his decisions as president.
Sounds a lot like the nonsense John Kennedy put up with in the Deep South of 1960 regarding his Catholicism.
Of course, that was more than 50 years ago but … these anti-Mormons use Romney’s religious beliefs to segue into criticism of his tenure as Massachusetts and his rescue of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah. In each case, these people claim that Romney is not a conservative and, by the way, did you know that he is the “father of gay marriage” in America?
It turns out that the true motive behind this email is to sell books. At the end of this diatribe is a promo for a new book by Tricia Erickson, who describes herself as a former Mormon bishop’s daughter and a political commentator.
Sometimes you can judge an email by its purposely delayed sales pitch.
