Gov. Rick Snyder and Speaker of the House Jase Bolger were among those on Wednesday dripping with praise for a new report that actually ranks Michigan No. 2 in the nation in an economic category.
A Bloomberg study found that, other than oil-rich North Dakota, Michigan’s economy has recovered at a faster rate from the 2008-09 Great Recession than any other state. House Majority Whip Pete Lund, a Shelby Township Republican, took a more sober approach in commenting on the Bloomberg report.
“I take the news of Michigan’s economy recovering at the second fastest rate in the nation with both pride and caution,” the former county commissioner said in a statement. “While it’s been said there are ‘no points for second place,’ we must acknowledge our work to put some points on the board. But, this is still only the first lap of our race to recovery — we might be on the tail of the leader, but there are now 48 other competitors in our rearview. Michigan cannot settle for second place and we surely can’t allow our new position to slip back into the middle of the pack.
“Our mission to re-open Michigan for business has been noticed today, but no rewards will be given until the great people of our state are back to work. Now, with a clear view of the leader, we must maintain our current position and do more to build upon the progress we’ve made so Michigan can take the lead and complete the entire race to recovery.”
A reasonable statement except that Lund, an avid sports fan, has me a little confused. Are we supposed to be putting points on the board or running laps around the competition?
Are we trying to be Calvin Johnson, or Carl Edwards?
