Hackel edges Smith by a couple inches
At an awards ceremony this morning, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel posed for a series of photos with local officials who were honored for establishing shared services with neighboring communities.
When Roseville Mayor John Chirkun, who stands well over six feet tall, stepped up for his turn in front of the camera, Hackel said he was employing a subtle move often used by county Prosecutor Eric Smith.
As he elevated himself up on his toes he told the crowd: “I’m going to do what Eric Smith does when standing next to someone taller, just before the photographer snaps the picture.” As the small crowd laughed loudly, Hackel added: “And if you don’t believe that, I want you to watch next time.”
A moment later, Hackel noticed that the diminutive Sterling Heights Mayor Richard Notte was waiting in the wings to receive his award.
“When Notte gets up here,” he said, “he’s going to need a chair to stand on.”
