Disdain for Donald Trump in Latin America, where he is
portrayed as a “jackass” —  and worse –
has been widely reported for several weeks.

But a piece in the New York Times finds that Trump is not
only despised in key parts of the world, he is also a subject of fascination as
people marvel at the bombastic billionaire’s appeal among American voters.

In France, a front page story in a left-wing newspaper, Liberation,
called the Republican presidential frontrunner a “vulgar” opportunist and “a
nutcase.” The headline for the story: “The American Nightmare.”

German tabloids, according to the Times, have been
getting a lot of mileage out of ridiculing the “Trump Show.” But Spiegel, a
highly regarded German publication, has portrayed Trump as the stereotypical ugly
American.

“There is something of a ‘wow effect about Trump and his
candidacy,’ a Spiegel reporter who’s covering the U.S. presidential campaign
told the Times. “… Someone like him would never even be close to being accepted
as a politician in Germany, so it is an exotic phenomenon.’

“‘Trump exposes a lot of what Germans particularly hate
about the United States — a rather narrow-minded worldview, a brutal form of
capitalism, and a militaristic approach to various crises in the world.’

“For Germans who have had little firsthand experience
with Americans, he added, Trump appears to confirm their beliefs. ‘They say,
‘Hey, this is what we think of the U.S. and he doesn’t even try to hide it.’ ”

In China, the Hong Kong press took offense when Trump
recently mocked the accents of Chinese businessmen.

Other Chinese shrug it off, as they view Trump as simply
the star of an American political entertainment show.

“I feel this guy is a racist,” one Chinese blogger wrote.
“I would not want democracy if (it means) men like him are elected.”
