Warren is Michigan’s top “white trash” city, based on rankings relying on several factors, according to a website known as roadsnacks.net.
In its evaluation of Macomb County’s largest city released over the weekend, Road Snacks asserts some data while also pouring on the snark:
Population: 134,196
Estimated White Trash: 24,367
Estimated Meth Heads: 7,513
Welfare Population: 20%
Payday Loan Outlets: 8Toss back a Budweiser, suck down another Camel, Warren, cause you’re the whitest trash of all in Michigan.
The (city) ranks in the top 10% for several categories, including the number of residents on welfare, the … amount of high school dropouts, as well as a high (number of) methadone clinics per capita.
To be sure, this is one of those websites that compiles countless lists and rankings and uses them as click-bait on the Internet. And much of north Warren is very different territory from south Warren.
Still, just for fun, here are the metrics they used, relying on federal data, to rank 123 Michigan cities (with populations over 5,000):
- Cities where there are lots of white people
- Cities where residents are poorer than average
- Cities where a high number of residents are high school dropouts
- Cities with a high number of single parents
- High drug use
- Higher than average Payday Loan outlets
- Violent cities (measured in aggravated assaults)
- Cities with a high number of residents on welfare
Add up all those factors and, according to the website, here is Michigan’s Top Ten:
- Warren
- Jackson
- Taylor
- Bay City
- Owosso
- Adrian
- Coldwater
- Ishpeming
- Alpena
- Port Huron
Sure, some people consider “white trash” a stereotypical, bigoted label – along with “hillbilly” and “redneck.” Road Snacks jumps right in, signaling that, from a long-term cultural standpoint, here is a way to explain the white trash label: “Take for instance Jerry Springer, Honey Boo Boo, Kid Rock, Eminem, Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite and even Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon movies.”
As far as I can tell, Warren Mayor Jim Fouts has not yet commented on his city’s new distinction.
Spot on chad.do you accept speaking engagement?
As a resident of Houghton county they clearly have never been to nor did they consider Calumet in this. Nearly everyone is drunk or loaded. The dropout rate is insanely high. Teen pregnancy is outrageous. The % of families on welfare is , well I can only think of a couple that are not frankly. And as far as white…until I was 7 I thought black people on t.v. were white people wearing makeup , this is many things in Calumet ethnic diversity however isn’t it. It is a very red area. Very religious. Would fit in easily in the most backwater Mississippi area without missing a beat and racism is rampant. Very , very homophobic. We have a much higher than average rate of both spousal abuse and child abuse. Driving is very very dangerous as drunken driving accidents and arrests are far above the national average as well. Our county law enforcment resembles something straight out of The Dukes of Hazzard ala Boss Hogg with it’s blatant corruption. I mean e are the nations poster child for white trash. My condolences to Warren , you were unfairly picked as you can’t even come close to the copper country.
Calumet is NOT as bad as Warren. I have lived back and forth my whole life. Not saying calumet hasn’t gotten bad over the years but you cant compare the 2..
Definitely a yooper!!!
What political party do these folks vote for? Being white trash I imagine they go Tea Bagger and vote Republican. Anyways, interesting story.
Democrat.. just like every other welfare collecting freeloader. Republicans work for their shit . Every poor city is ran by democrats, just look at Detroit, Flint, etc.
Well… Considering Warren’s mayor is a republican, you just made yourself sound like an idiot!
: Considering Warren’s mayor is a republican: – No he’s not. He’s a Bernie guy.
Nick lol you’re so wrong. Democrats “work for their shit“ but don’t have a problem sharing some of their time and earnings to help those who can’t. Republicans also like to work for their shit but also try to find ways to increase their shit regardless of who gets screwed.
voting records prove the exact opposite. The poor and those who heavily rely upon welfare statistically supported Trump in very high numbers. So, not sure where you got that idea from.
Shut up donkey. The poorest states are red states, and they also have the most welfare cases.
Omg you people are to much. Being republican doesn’t make you rich. And being Democrats doesn’t mean your stupid. I currently don’t clame either party since i don’t agree 100% with either. I am college educated make 80,000 a year and come from hard farm workers so stop your hatred. I lived in Warren and it made me who i am a hard working nurse.
Go team nurse
Yet you spell “CLAIM” as CLAME..? Hummmm???
Damn autocorrect

So where do the black trash live if you are going there with this article, or are you afraid to publish that?
Having lived in Bloomfield Township,Waterford on Williams Lake, Grosse Pointe Park and Woods I have to say that my experience differs a great deal with this opinion. Warren does have many different areas and I agree some are not where I would want to live. I have lived the last 3 years in what is described as North Warren. I’m near 14 Mile and Schoenherr. It’s quiet with a variety of styles of homes and maturing trees, with good landscaping ideas where I live. My next door neighbor is an ex-marine w/2 Masters degrees. His wife has her masters and teaches in the Warren Consolidated School System. On the other side I have a couple that just moved in. He is retired but worked at Chryslers for over 35 years. His wife is still working in the Ministry. They are African American and caused a bit of a stir whan they first moved in . I now have to say they are the best neighbors I’ve EVER had and am embarrassed by MY stupidity. Their home is by far the most beautiful in the area and since their arrival they have put thousands into the maintenance and upkeep of their home. I could go on and on about my neighbors and it would be positive. Every area has its wealthy and poor. If I were to be able to live anywhere in the Detroit area in which I can afford, with good schools, well kept homes, great police and fire protection, plenty of shopping, great parks and places of worship. Folks ,what do you want? If you are like me and don’t have the money for a 250,000 -300,000 house this is good enough for me. Crime in the Pointes is much worse than here .I’d buy here first before there. Trust me,3 of my kids went to GP schools and 3 went to Cousino.I’ll take N. Warren …Respectfully, R. Wearing
I live in South Warren, because I bought at the tail end of the housing market boom and it was where I could afford to get a nice brick home (ground to roof) with central air, a basement and a garage. I’ve had family tell me I need to move, unfortunately, with the crash the housing prices dropped so much I’m still under water on my mortage and couldn’t move unless I had $10,000+ to bring with me to closing. Anyway, I’ve been in this house since 2003 and the only bad/crime thing that has happened to me is my bicycle was stolen out of my garage in 2011. None of us had locks on our garage doors. The worst thing to me about Warren is the infrastrucure is failing and they’ve flooded my basement 5 times since 2011. It is frustrating to see that every time a new business goes up in my area its a crappy Family Dollar store or a new mobile phone store. I would like to see Warren work a little harder at getting some decent businesses around South Van Dyke. BTW, I’m working on my Masters degree and I’ve worked in the legal field for 25 years, working at one of the larger firms downtown for 15 years now. I’ve never been on welfare and most of my immediate neighbors seem to work or are retired.
