( A couple of local items to post that may be of interest)
The Sterling Heights/Utica Republicans (SHUR) are extending an invitation to all area Republicans to join their newly formed book club.
The first meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Hatchy’s, 7759 Auburn Road, in downtown Utica. Just go upstairs to the lounge.
The group will be reading books (fiction, and non-fiction; past and current) that deal with current issues facing the nation.
The first book that will be read is Ayn Rand’s classic 1957 novel, “Atlas Shrugged”. Rand is an iconic figure in many conservative circles and has especially influenced the Libertarian Party.
Because the book spans more than 1,000 pages, the club will be breaking it up into thirds for discussion purposes.
The club is also planning a group viewing of the movie version of the book, which debuted in theaters on Friday.
In the future, all books to be read will be voted upon by the members.

Well if this isn't a step in the right direction. The Republicans in Washington decried the health care bill because it was so thick. There's that classic picture of Candy Miller sitting at her desk with those big, thick pieces of legislation piled up in front of her. My oh my! What's a poor reading legislator from Michigan to do? If only she and the other bought and sold Repubs in Washington had figured out they just needed a reading circle. Hopefully when the SHUR group is done with Rand they"ll move on to non-fiction.
