State Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer may be known as Lansing’s most attractive lawmaker, but she certainly doesn’t let beauty get in the way of bluntly battering Gov. Snyder and the Republicans.
Snyder has been in office for just two months and Whitmer, an East Lansing Democrat, has declared that the GOP governor has already betrayed his promises made during the 2010 campaign.
“Already, Gov. Snyder and legislative Republicans seem to have forgotten why they were sent to Lansing and have put forward a budget proposal that plays (the) same tired political games,” Whitmer said in a memo to Democratic loyalists. “Instead of the shared sacrifice the governor liked talking about on the campaign trail, (his proposed) budget puts the sacrifice squarely on the backs of our seniors and working families while allowing large corporations to share the rewards.”
Whitmer’s e-mail message was a none-too-subtle battle cry, complete with a sales pitch that grassroots Democrats donate up to $250 to revive the beleaguered Senate Democrats’ empty campaign coffers.
“We will challenge the Republicans’ excessive cuts to schools that would cripple our education system, stand up for our seniors by opposing efforts to tax the pension checks they spent their lives earning, and support Michigan’s working families by protecting the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) the Republicans want to eliminate,” Whitmer said.
