Joining the gadflies that routinely attend Shelby Township board meetings, a group showed up on Tuesday that wanted to talk about the latest right-wing conspiracy theories related to so-called “smart meters.”

Smart meters are new high-tech gadgets that monitor the patterns of your home electricity use and make adjustments for maximum efficiency. But some are convinced that the meters are connected to a government conspiracy to spy on people, or to shut their power off if they display improper political behavior.
The group that showed up at the Shelby board meeting seeks state legislation and local ordinances to block the utility companies from installing smart meters. Some urge resistance if a DTE worker tries to get on your property. And some believe that the smart meters give off lethal doses of radiation.
In the real world, these people are dismissed as part of the tin foil hat crowd. But one woman who warned about radiation took it one step further – she wore what appeared to be a tin-foil coat. To get a look at this bizarre scene, log on here and move forward to the last part of the meeting, during public participation.
