With critics questioning if or when Gov. Snyder’s tax system will produce new jobs, one Macomb County lawmaker is calling for a new metric on the Snyder “dashboard.”
Rep. Jon Switalski, a Warren Democrat, said the governor’s online dashboard keeps tabs on the Michigan unemployment rate but should more specifically list an ongoing measurement that shows the number of new jobs produced in the state.
Switalski also wants an annual report from the governor’s office to the Legislature that outlines what progress has been made on the jobs front.
With little evidence that the new Michigan tax structure has made much of a ripple in the U.S. business community, it’s possible Switalski might even garner some Republican support on this one.
The request is for additional transparency by adding a dashboard item that shows which businesses have created jobs because of the business tax cuts and lists those specific jobs.
“Ninety-five percent of businesses will pay no Michigan business taxes at all –- an outrageously generous break that comes with no strings attached,” Switalski said.

How would you verify any claimed job creations? Just because a business increases employee numbers doesn't mean they are related to tax breaks. If a business needs more employees they will add them based on a firm business case. A company will not add employees simply because they got a tax break. It would take 900,000 new employes paying $2000 each in State income tax to offset $1.8 billion in tax breaks. I don't see that happening.
If you want to create jobs you need to increase spending by the majority of people. Currently we seem to be in a race to the bottom. The government and business are demanding lower wages from all workers so they end up with less money to spend. This eliminates jobs not create jobs, why would a business higher somebody to produce something they can not sell? All this talk about lowering taxes on business to create jobs does not work without empowering consumers with the money to buy. I am all for fair taxes but to take away from the many and give to the few will not fix the economy. The money has to be put in the hands of the people that will spend it. Business owners will hire people to make products if they can find consumer demand and that means consumers with the money to spend. So try raising the standard of living for the majority !
