Hillary Clinton’s lead in Michigan has slipped to just three points in a new poll, indicating the race with Donald Trump has tightened dramatically in the past six weeks.

A survey by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA found Clinton’s 11-point lead of early August now stands at 38-35% over Trump, with Libertarian Gary Johnson at 10% and Green Party candidate Jill Stein trailing at 4%. Surprisingly, 13 percent are still undecided. In a two-way match-up, Clinton had a 42%-38% edge.

With both candidates under 40%, the Michigan race could likely remain volatile all the way to Election Day on Nov. 8.

In southeast Michigan – the tri-county area of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties – the Democratic nominee held a solid lead of 47-32%, though that margin has shrunk from 53-27% in August. Undecideds in the metro Detroit area remain at 11%.

The poll was commissioned by the Detroit Free Press, WXYZ-TV in Detroit and two outstate TV news outlets.

After her “deplorables” remark and the perception that she has hid health problems from the voters, Clinton’s unfavorable rankings among voters jumped from 51% to 56%. Trump’s unfavorables continued at 63%.

The former secretary of state remains bogged down by voters’ beliefs that she is untruthful and skirts the law. For the Republican nominee, just 37% of respondents said Trump is more trustworthy than Clinton, while a mere 30% said she was more trustworthy. In the middle, 30% of voters said neither could be described as “honest and trustworthy.”

One comical bonus for Democrats who see the new poll as concerning news: Among the top reasons pro-Clinton voters told pollsters they are opposed to the Republican nominee: “Trump is insane-crazy.”
