Newt Gingrich has placed such an emphasis on maintaining a positive campaign that, as recently as two days ago, he was using the no-negative-ads approach as a selling point for Iowa voters. But now it’s crunch time and the whole “above the fray” strategy is out the window.
As Gingrich fell from first to fourth in a new Iowa poll, he’s lashing out at the two current frontrunners. A Gingrich Super PAC is calling Mitt Romney the “second most dangerous man in America” – possibly the most scurrilous and ridiculous hyperbole of the entire campaign.
What’s more, in reaction to Romney’s comment that he could support any of the GOP candidates, Gingrich said on CNN that he draws the line at Ron Paul, who has been hammering the former speaker in a big-buy TV ad campaign. Paul’s views, Gingrich said, are “totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American.”
