Headed to a meeting in Detroit this morning, state Sen. Rick Jones issued a Facebook warning to Motown that he has a license to carry a concealed weapon.

The offhand comment by the Grand Ledge Republican was apparently a reference to two shootings in downtown Detroit on Monday night, just before and after the annual fireworks show, that injured four people. The senator is an outspoken opponent of gun-rights restrictions.

Jones’ comment about his concealed pistol license (CPL) sparked dozens of comments on his Facebook thread about the degree of safety in the city and whether Detroit suffers from racial stereotypes. The senator responded to critics by citing a remark from a few years ago by Police Chief James Craig “who said everyone who can legally carry in Detroit should be prepared to defend themselves.”
