Approximately 100 airmen from the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County have been deployed to assist with U.S. military operations in Afghanistan.

The Nation Guard crews, who handle the KC-135 mid-air refueling planes, were deployed on Dec. 12 but the Selfridge brass made no announcement until this morning. They will serve overseas during the Christmas holiday season and into early 2017.

“Once again, our Airmen have stepped forward and answered the call,” said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, 127th Wing Commander. “From our youngest airman to our most experienced, one quality shines through — their commitment to serving our great country.”

The Selfridge forces are assisting with the revised U.S. mission in Afghanistan, created at the start of 2015 and known as Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, which focuses on training, advising and assisting Afghan troops in counter-terrorism tactics.

The deployed Airmen are members of the 127th Wing’s Air Refueling Group which, in the past year, has performed short-term deployments in the European, Pacific and Central Command areas of Defense Department operations.
