In Royal Oak, a progressive city, one of the Detroit metropolitan area’s most prominent hangouts for Millennials and hipsters, an outburst by white middle school students against Hispanic classmates – apparently sparked by Donald Trump’s presidential election — has become national news.

The students chanted enthusiasm for one of Trump’s platform planks — building a wall between the United States and Mexico.

The student chants of “Build The Wall” were captured on video and widely shared on Facebook. It took place at lunchtime at Royal Oak Middle School. Some of the Hispanic students were reportedly reduced to tears.

The incident was one of many anti-minority activities erupting across the nation in reaction to Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential race. At the same time, the election sparked numerous anti-Trump protests nationwide in major cities, spawning the hashtag #NotMyPresident and resulting in the setting of fires and other vandalism.

The Royal Oak outburst was caught on video, for just a few seconds, reflecting the outpouring in the middle school cafeteria.

The smartphone video has since gone viral, with more than 5 million views. It had been shared more than 104,000 times as of Thursday evening.
