In the wake of today’s rally at the state Capitol, where seniors numbering 500 to 1,100 (depending on who you believe) demonstrated against the governor’s controversial pension tax, it’s worth noting that one of the key players in this fight is from Macomb County.
The Coalition for Secure Retirement, or CSR, which is comprised of active and retired state and school employees, is led by John Olekszyk, a retired Roseville teacher.
“It is heartening to see how many state policymakers understand that many retirees simply cannot supplement their fixed incomes. They worked hard all their lives and trusted that the tax status of their pensions would not change,” said Oleskszyk, who served on the 2009-10 Macomb County Charter Commission.
CSR is hammering home the message that many retirees took the state’s tax-free treatment of
pensions into consideration as they calculated exactly when they could afford to retire.
Apparently a lot of nervous legislators are listening.
