Democratic Congressman Gary Peters’ attempt to win re-election in a district that includes a lot of unfamiliar territory took a big step forward today when he landed the endorsement of the UAW.
In his campaign for the new 14th District, which stretches from the Belle Isle bridge to Bloomfield Hills, Peters has now racked up several major union endorsements despite his reputation as a moderate.
In the auto workers’ announcement, Chuck Hall, UAW Region 1 Director, cited the Bloomfield Township Democrat’s  role in securing rescue loans for Detroit auto manufacturers, his efforts to protect the middle class, and his focus on more and better paying jobs in the Metro Detroit region.
The endorsement may serve as a major blow to Peters’ strongest competitor for the 14th District Democratic nomination, fellow Congressman Hansen Clarke of Detroit.
“As a member of Congress, Gary Peters has shown tremendous leadership and courage by leading the fight for the automotive industry, including his work to secure the auto loans which saved over a million American automotive jobs,” Hall said in the announcement.  “Gary is a fighter and we are proud to put all of our energy behind him to send him back to Congress to continue to fight for middle class families.”
Peters said in a statement: “The hardworking men and women of the UAW built the American auto industry and helped create the middle class. They are the reason why Detroit will always be the Motor City and I’m honored to have their support.
“I’m committed to fighting for real Michigan values like creating more good paying manufacturing jobs across Southeast Michigan and ensuring that middle class families can live the American Dream. With growing labor support, I’m confident that we’ll be successful in our grassroots campaign to drive the Metro Detroit region forward.”
In addition to Clarke, those battling for the 14th District seat include Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence and former state Rep. Mary Waters recently said she plans to run as well.
Peters has a clear leg up, however, with a list of labor endorsements that includes: Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO Unified Council of Michigan, Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council,Michigan Maritime Trades Port Council, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Michigan State Council.
