While some political reporters this past week analyzed President Obama’s song list for campaign rallies, at POTUS, the politics channel on Sirius/XM radio, they were revealing something truly odd about a song routinely played at Newt Gingrich campaign events.
The song, “Independence Day” by Martina McBride, has a nice chorus that seems to espouse patriotism. But in fact, it’s something quite different. It’s a song about a young girl with an abusive, alcoholic father and an enabling mother.
The girl takes matters into her own hands by setting the family’s house on fire, killing her parents. (Whether the mother also dies is open to interpretation.)
Not exactly the kind of upbeat, all-American message that a politician wants to project.
Country music fans have probably known for years about the song’s true meaning – it was released in 1993. Many who don’t listen to country might also recognize the tune.
The opening line of the chorus is: “Let freedom ring. Let the white dove sing.”
But the giveaway that there’s more going on here is when McBride sings about a “day of reckoning.” The final line of the chorus: “Let the guilty pay. It’s independence day.”
While Gingrich might be slightly embarrassed to learn the true meaning of the song, I wonder what Sean Hannity thinks. The radio talker must have been made aware of the tune’s content many, many times.
Yet, it has remained as the Hannity show’s opening theme song for many years.
