Endless attempts by right-wing commentators to portray Barack Obama as a president who spends far too much time on Air Force One, or on vacation, or on the golf course, or enjoying lavish meals with First Lady Michelle Obama have repeatedly hit a wall of facts that expose their hyperpartisanship.
Obama’s time spent on the golf course (which pales in comparison to the tanned one, House Speaker John Boehner) has been a particularly pathetic subject of attempted derision by the right.
USA Today reported the other day that Obama had set a new personal record by engaging in 32 golf outings this year. Obviously, that means that the prior years of his presidency resulted in fewer trips to the links, though Obama has year-round access to some of the nation’s finest warm-weather courses and can quickly squeeze in a round anytime he wants via helicopter at one of the Washington area’s military bases.
I asked a colleague of mine who is an avid golfer how 32 outings a year — far less than once a week — compares to the general public. He said that he played more than twice as many rounds as Obama this year, despite Michigan’s early onset of cold weather.
What’s more, he said that many of his golfing buddies play more than 100 rounds a year, especially among those who make a trip or two to Florida.
So much for the talk-radio nonsense about Obama spending too much time on the golf course.
Put this in the category of the flag lapel pin, “lipstick on a pig,” the fist bump with the First Lady, and failing to celebrate Christmas in a traditional way.
