Macomb County’s “Big Five” elected officials — Treasurer Ted Wahby, Clerk Carmella Sabaugh, Public Works Commissioner Tony Marrocco, Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and Prosecutor Eric Smith — are expected to announce tonight that they are all seeking re-election in 2012. Or, in Wickersham’s case, seeking election for the first time.
While not necessarily a surprise, the announcement has been preceded by some speculation in political circles centered on the future of Sabaugh and Marrocco, who were first elected to countywide office nearly 20 years ago, and Wahby, who took over his current post in 1994.
The announcement will come at Wahby’s annual Christmas party, held at the Blossom Heath Inn in St. Clair Shores, where the audience of 200-plus will include some of Macomb’s movers and shakers.
The newest kids on the block among the Big Five — all of whom are Democrats — are Smith, elected in 2004, and Wickersham, who was appointed sheriff about a year ago when Mark Hackel was elected as Macomb’s first county executive.
