Mike Wrathell, who I criticized in my Sunday column as one of the weak candidates nominated by the Macomb Republicans for countywide office, has fired back. Making his second consecutive run for county prosecutor, Wrathell wrote to me a bluntly worded email response.
He emphasized his opposition to Democratic Prosecutor Eric Smith’s requirement that his employees cannot work for an opposition candidate at election time.

Here’s a portion of what Wrathell wrote:

“Instead of saying how weak a candidate I am, why
don’t you realize that I am defending your livelihood by defending the First
Amendment from Eric’s ‘Loyalty Oath,’ an oath that was recently confirmed by
Judge Biernat of our esteemed circuit court, who once worked for Eric.

Dostoyevski (sic) once said the definition of man is that he has two legs and
is ungrateful. He must have been thinking about you.

No other attorney bothered to run in ’08 or in 2012. No assistant prosecutor
felt his or her oath to defend the federal and state constitution was worth
their job. As an creative person and an attorney, I realize the importance of
free speech. Sometimes it has to be defended. You poo-poo at that and would
rather take potshots at me. Shame on you for that.”
