In an era when grade inflation is rampant in K-12 education, does Gov. Snyder actually want to impose a partial merit pay system for teachers?
The governor’s education reform plan announced yesterday calls for teacher pay raises based, in part, on the performance of their students. But Snyder’s plan to introduce “rigorous” teacher evaluations into the mix could devolve into a nonsensical system if pay is involved.
I wonder if the result will be that principals or administrators will universally give their highest performance standard to every teacher on the payroll. If that happens, what will Snyder do?
In the private sector, merit pay often amounts to nothing more than kiss-a@# pay, based on a single boss’ decision about which employees he or she likes the most.
Perhaps, instead of students bringing an apple to the teacher, teachers will be bringing an apple to the principal.
