Many political observers have awarded Shelby Township the title of the craziest, most dysfunctional political system in Macomb County. That’s a high bar to clear. If Shelby is No. 1, then it has surpassed Warren and Harrison Township.
On Tuesday night, the Shelby shenanigans reached new heights. Here’s the account by Macomb Daily reporter Frank DeFrank:
“More than a few folks have described Shelby Township Board of Trustees meetings as circus-like. One anonymous person drove home the point Tuesday and sent in the clown.

“A woman clad in a clown outfit from head to toe – she called herself “Sassy the Clown” — made an appearance, apparently to deliver a silent statement about the decorum at recent meetings.

“But just what the statement is remains unclear. Sassy told Fox 2 News she was hired to show up at the meeting and sit in the audience, but not to otherwise disrupt the meeting. She said she has no idea what message her client wanted to send.

“‘I don’t live in (Shelby Township),’ Sassy told Fox 2 News. ‘I was just hired to do a job.’

“Emotions have run high at recent township board meetings, particularly over issues like a towing contract and the selection of a new township clerk to replace Terri Kowal; so much so that board members recently adopted rules on “decorum” to follow during the meetings.”

By the way, the choice for new township clerk was Republican activist Stan Grot, chairman of the 10 District GOP, who was sworn in this afternoon. The township board consists of seven Republicans.
