A potential
preview of the Democratic primary race for governor in 2018 will take place in
Warren on Monday as the main speakers at a community fundraising event will be
former Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer and Macomb County Executive Mark
Hackel.
They will
speak at a fundraiser for the Motor City Symphony (also known as the Warren
Symphony Orchestra), an event that will honor/roast state Sen. Steve Bieda of
Warren.
Potential
Democratic candidates for the 2018 election, including Congressman Dan Kildee
of Flint, have quietly kept their name in contention as they make the rounds at
various events. It’s not clear if Whitmer, of East Lansing, sought to speak at
an event where Hackel is on the bill.

Last week,
the former senator quickly brushed aside a rumor that she would make her former
adversary, ex-Senate majority leader Randy Richardville, her running mate (as a
Republican) if she wins the ’18 nomination. Whitmer said she had returned to a
legal career at one of the state’s top law firms and was not engaged in any
type of political strategizing.
