Gov. Rick Snyder has a
message for the College Republican National Committee that put together a
controversial ad for his
campaign that features wedding dresses: “It’s really dumb and offensive.”
The already infamous 60-second
spot focuses on a young bride-to-be trying on two wedding dresses — one called
the Rick Snyder, the other called the Mark Schauer.
The narrator praises the Snyder dress, citing the governor’s
track record, and awkwardly criticizes the Schauer dress, equating it with high
taxes and double-digit unemployment.
In an interview with The
Macomb Daily, Snyder said his campaign had no input into the making of the ad and they did
not see the spot in advance.
Asked if he will insist
that the College Republicans take down the advertisement in Michigan, the
governor replied:
“You can quote me real
well in your paper. You can say that I called that ad dumb and offensive, and I
would be happy to send them a copy of that quote.”
The media has excoriated
the commercial, saying it displays a chauvinistic mindset, and Time magazine
instantly named it “the most sexist Republican ad of the year.”

Virtually identical
versions of the Republican ad are airing in FloridaPennsylvania, IllinoisColorado, and Arkansas to support GOP gubernatorial candidates in
those states.
