Caitlin Dewey of The Washington Post’s
“The Fix” blog has compiled 21 strange and little-noticed programs and services
that are idled due to the government shutdown.
Some of this stuff is pretty serious; some is just
goofy/funny.

For example, EVerify
will go offline. More
than 400,000 employers use the popular system to check their employees’
immigration and eligibility status.

The
U.S. Coast Guard will delay licenses for
both recreational and for-profit boaters.

The
Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement will stop monitoring
coal mines
.

Here is the one that will get the
Republicans buzzing:

Only 15
people
will care for the White House and the Obama family, down from
their usual staff of 90.
