According to a new statewide poll, voters who harbor intense anti-Trump views and are eager to defeat pro-Trump candidates for state offices dominate the electorate heading into the upcoming 2018 mid-term Michigan elections.

If accurate, the survey by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA could spell bad news in November for Republican candidates for governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state House and Senate.

The unusual poll asked respondents to express their enthusiasm about voting in the upcoming elections based on a range from 0 to 100.

What EPIC-MRA found was that Democrats, especially liberals, are far more energized heading into the fall elections than Republicans. The same poll found President Trump’s Michigan favorable/unfavorable rating in the ditch, a 37-56 percent.

The enthusiasm gap in this poll should be especially concerning for the MIGOP. Based on the 0-100 scale of those motivated to vote in November, Democrats hold a 10-point advantage, 63-53 percent.

On a personal level, the survey numbers show problems for Attorney General Bill Schuette in his bid for governor, while also demonstrating an enthusiasm gap in favor of Democrats among voters who are pro-choice on the abortion issue and labor union households.

Those at the 100-level are 60 percent conservatives, 73 percent liberals and 44 percent moderates. A further breakdown shows Democratic men at 56 percent, Democratic women at 67 percent, independent men at 49 percent, independent women at 42 percent, GOP men at 52 percent, and GOP women at 54 percent.

Given that the Trump era has been dominated by chaotic changes in politics on a daily basis, don’t be surprised if these Michigan numbers shift between now and November.
