Susan Demas of Inside Michigan Politics rightfully
expressed her disgust the other day in response to the snarky, mean-spirited online
comments aimed at John Dingell upon his retirement announcement.
In her column for MLive, Demas asks a simple question: When
a man serves 59 years in Congress and has a hand in some of the most
consequential legislation of the 20th Century, why is that some people cannot
treat him with respect as he prepares to step down?
Here’s more from Demas:
“U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), decided being
gracious to a colleague took too much work. Instead, he fired off a snide tweet
about Dingell ‘overcoming job lock.’
Tim Bos, a
(campaign) aide to U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Milford) who believes in Sandy
Hook conspiracy theories,
summed up his feelings on Dingell’s retirement
with: ‘WOO HOO!’
“Social media and story comments are flooded with folks
who probably can’t even tell you what state Dingell represents. But they’re
eager to exhort him to ‘Get a real job!’ or use his retirement as a platform
for their astute views on #termlimits.
“Welcome to the new political dialogue. The other side is
the enemy. Show no mercy, even as they’re exiting the arena.”
