Political analysts trying to decipher the Donald Trump
phenomenon and the rise of the angry voter may want to take a close look at a
new poll that finds many Americans are so agitated by Washington that they
might support a military coup in which the armed forces seize control of the
country.

A new poll by YouGov found
that nearly one-third say they could imagine a situation in which they would
support the military taking over the federal government

If
that seems shocking, consider this: The survey found potential support for a
coup up at 43 percent among Republicans – close to a majority.
What’s happening out there across the country? Well, YouGov’s latest research shows that officers in the military are held in much greater esteem than their civilian superiors, and that they are widely viewed as having the best interests of the country in mind instead of their own selfish concerns.

A
few months ago I was roundly criticized for writing about a meme on Facebook,
posted by a Michigan political activist, that suggested the military should be
attacking the White House, not engaging in actions overseas. My critics said
that I was making much too much of a single, kooky declaration by someone whose only position of authority is his post as the president of the Fairgove Village Council.

But
the YouGov poll suggests that a scary form of kookiness is bubbling to the
surface all over the nation.
While
41 percent could not imagine ever supporting a military takeover, the backing
for such a move is not found strictly among right-wing conservatives.

The
survey found support among 20 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of
independents.
