Here’s a quote that caught my eye:
“It’s crazy. But it’s consistent with a modern
communicative template devoid of context. We’re quick to pummel and just as
quick to praise. Nobody wants perspective. Allegedly reasoned discourse is
divided between ‘lovers’ and ‘haters.’ There’s no longer a middle ground.”

So, was that bit of commentary about social media offered
up by a moderate politician who’s taken a beating in the Twittersphere? Maybe
Chris Christie? Or is it a thoughtful idea offered by a centrist columnist such
as David Brooks or Tom Friedman?

No. It comes from a sportswriter, Drew Sharp of the
Detroit Free Press, referring to the MSU Spartans’ implausible 48-hour rise
from a disappointing team to the hot pick to win the NCAA tourney. I love my
Spartans but even I am a bit overwhelmed and befuddled by this Internet-driven
instant lovefest outside of the Sparty nation.

Btw: If you haven’t heard, President Obama completed his
bracket and he has MSU defeating Louisville in the championship game. Say what
you want about his political skills, but the guy knows college basketball.
