With less than eight weeks remaining until August recess, No Labels, a national group determined to increase bipartisanship in Washington, issued an open letter to every member of Congress today. No Labels is challenging them to delay all scheduled recesses until a bipartisan deal is reached to address the fiscal crisis. The “No Deal, No Break” campaign will direct lawmakers to stay in Washington until there is a deal in place to deal with the debt ceiling limit.
“Every day that we waste without a bipartisan solution to this crisis, we risk more damage to our already fragile economy. Now is not the time for our nation’s lawmakers to reward themselves with a recess,” said Kiki McLean, a No Labels leader. “Congress needs to stay in Washington and finish the job. No deal, no break — it’s as simple as that.”
Tonight, No Labels members from across the country will watch the Republican presidential primary debate in New Hampshire to hear whether the candidates will publicly support the No Labels approach to resolving the fiscal crisis.
“There will be those who use tonight’s debate to score political points. But the majority of voters will judge the candidates on how well they can work with Congress to get our fiscal house in order. We need candidates who can urge Congress to work together to solve this crisis. And we need our elected officials to stay in Washington until it is resolved,” added Mark McKinnon, a No Labels co-founder.
As part of the “No Deal, No Break” campaign, No Labels members from every congressional district will sign an open letter to members of Congress calling on them to “stay in Washington and work together to find a bipartisan, common sense solution to address this crisis.”
