As members of the media remain perplexed about Donald
Trump’s popularity among Republican voters, the pundits will also be scratching
their heads over the next few days in response to a new poll that shows Ohio
Gov. John Kasich lost ground in the GOP contest after Thursday’s debate.

Kasich, by far, received the most praise from the press
in the numerous post-debate analyses for his steady, upbeat performance on the
stage in Cleveland.

Mainstream media outlets such as Time, CNN, CNBC,
National Journal and Business Insider singled out the late-comer to the
presidential race as the most impressive.

At the Wall Street Journal’s “Washington Wire” blog, the
verdict was this:

“His solid performance included offering one of the most
cohesive visions articulated for what he thinks needs to be done in this
country and why he wants to be president.”

Yet, the new NBC/WSJ poll released today shows that
Kasich is down to 2 percent in the 17-candidate field, compared to a 3.2
percent average in the pre-debate polls. At the current rate, he may not even
make it onto the stage for the CNN debate next month, which is limited to the
top 10 contenders.

Apparently, the governor’s relatively moderate politics,
especially his message urging acceptance of gay marriage in response to a
debate question, did not sit well with the GOP base.
