Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel routinely refers to
Macomb County as the state’s fastest-growing county but new rankings compiled by Crain’s Detroit Business suggest that Mark is far off the mark.
Crain’s list of the fastest-growing companies in the
tri-county area includes no Macomb County firms in the top 10 and just four from
Macomb on the entire list of 52 employers. Not surprisingly, Oakland County companies dominate the list.
While housing construction and real estate have revived
across the county, it appears that dozens of companies across the region have
benefited more from the auto industry renaissance than those in Macomb County. Crain’s
list, which is heavily auto-related, is based on a company’s revenue growth
from 2009 to 2012.
Of the four Macomb firms on the list, three are located
in Warren: Universal Truckload Services, U.S. Manufacturing and SET
Enterprises. The fourth name on the list is Key Safety Systems of Sterling
Heights.
What that means is that large communities and towns that traditionally
depend on industry – such as Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, Roseville, Shelby
Township, Fraser and Chesterfield Township – are largely off the radar.
