Some readers may have thought it was a bit harsh when The Macomb Daily chose to use a quote from a county commissioner, “Hackel wants to be king,” as a big bold headline on a news story on Wednesday.
But it appears County Executive Mark Hackel took it all in stride — and used it as an opportunity to have a little fun.

I’m told that Hackel showed up for work on Thursday morning with a crown on his head, carrying a scepter and wearing a robe fit for a king. (Let’s hope it was a rental — I would hate to think the exec keeps that kind of get-up in his closet.)
Hackel played out the gag to the hilt, ordering a Department of Roads official to get down on one knee and bow before him. With chuckling staff looking on, Hackel reportedly tapped the scepter on each shoulder of his subject and decreed that he was knight of the Hackel kingdom.

It’s nice to see the exec demonstrating a sense of humor.
