In case you missed it, the MIRS news service in Lansing has sent a breaking news alert saying that former Republican Congressman Pete Hoekstra will run next year against Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow after all.
MIRS reports that the decision is coming “very, very quickly” and comes just days after Politico reported that the unsuccessful 2010 Michigan gubernatorial candidate was reconsidering the race against the incumbent.
Hoekstra, who bowed out of consideration several months ago, MIRS that a decision is coming “very, very quickly.”
The Republican search for a candidate has dragged on so long that Michigan Democratic Party Mark Brewer has routinely skewered the GOP for its difficulties. The ragged Republican process has caused consternation ever since state party Chairman Bobby Schostak dissed Hoekstra and former secretary of state Terri Lynn Land for stepping aside. At the time, Schostak said a candidate “head and shoulders” above the rest would emerge, which led to a wild series of leaks about potential GOP contenders.
The latest news emerging on Friday, that the GOP was settling for Oakland County drain commissioner John McCulloch as their Senate standardbearer, delighted the Democrats. Here is the phony ad that the MDP created to mark the occasion:

Hoekstra, the former vice president of marketing at Herman Miller, opted to run for governor last year after nine terms in Congress. The Holland Republican finished second in the 2010 primary to now-Gov. Rick Snyder. He announced in April that he would not run against Stabenow but last week began reconsidering the possibility.

Since January, Hoekstra has been heading up a new private sector consulting venture with his daughter, Erin Hoekstra, called Global Strategies. He also consults for the Dickstein Shapiro firm in Washington, according to Politico.

The news of a possible shakeup in Michigan’s Senate campaign comes on the same day that a new EPIC/MRA poll was released, finding that 51 percent of statewide voters disapprove of Stabenow’s job performance.
