Thanks to countless news reports, Wikipedia has created quite a buzz by blocking access to the English version of its site as a protest against anti-piracy legislation pending in Congress. A Wikipedia message explains that they oppose “legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet.”
News accounts of the battle, however, fail to mention that “Wikipedia’s blackout isn’t really a blackout,” according to Byers.
“Not only is the site accessible via mobile — or, for that matter, via Facebook — it is also accessible via Wikipedia.org. As with the New York Times paywall, if you hit the escape key before the page finishes loading, you can access the regular Wikipedia content without the blackout screen. (Granted, that’s a loophole that most people don’t know about.)”
Here’s how to get past the Wikipedia blackout
Online columnist Dylan Byers writes that, while estimates indicate Wikipedia’s blackout today will affect tens of millions, web users have an easy, back-door way to reach the site.
