The Macomb County Democratic Party has launched a series of public policy lunches, and the speaker at the inaugural event on Tuesday was … County Executive Mark Hackel.
Yes, Hackel, whose executive candidacy in 2010 was vigorously opposed by party Chairman Ed Bruley and his allies, was invited by Bruley to speak on “The Role of the County Executive.”
About 100 people showed up for this “Spring Luncheon,” and it appears that Hackel was well received. He spoke for about 45 minutes, including a question-and-answer session with the audience.
Well, the health of the Macomb Democratic Party has come a long way in just 12 months. It was spring 2010 when Hackel, then the county sheriff, launched an all-out effort to recruit precinct delegates – a move that was widely viewed as an attempt to oust Bruley as party chairman.
What constitutes peace? A down and out Bruley eating crow because he just can't stand to be on the outside looking in? One thing is for sure, Bruley is not cut out for the political wilderness. He did the exact same thing when Bonior stepped down from congress and then lost the Democratic primary for Governor. First, he made nice with Sandy Levin and then with Jennifer Granholm. He's never been above using his political enemies to make a buck. Besides, after the last election, there are several "Bruley Boys" who still need jobs.
