In case you missed it, two of Macomb County’s top Republicans applied for the job of Shelby Township clerk – and both were rejected by the GOP-dominated township board.
Stan Grot, chairman of the 10th Congressional District Republicans, was expected to get the post, but he only received five votes, with Trustee Lisa Manzella, a Republican, dissenting. Under Shelby’s troublesome rules, a vacancy on the township board must be filled by a unanimous vote.
In this case, the opening was created when Teri Kowall resigned to take the clerk’s job in Auburn Hills. That left the board with six members, five of whom are Republicans.
The second rejection was suffered by former Macomb GOP chairman Jared Maynard, currently the Harrison Township deputy treasurer, who never got beyond the applicant/interview stage of the process.
With the board deadlocked, they decided to make Supervisor Richard Stathakis the temporary clerk.
