Fouts, who likes to think of himself as the “Buy American” mayor, saluted the auto companies at the end of his speech and offered some car buying advice to the crowd.
He made a veiled reference to his most recent stop by the police for speeding, when he remarked to the Royal Oak police officer that his Dodge Charger has more horsepower than he realized. The mayor has complained bitterly about The Macomb Daily’s coverage of his previous lack of a driver license, and the tickets he has received when he does have a license.“Don’t buy a Dodge Charger because a Charger will get you in trouble,” he said. “And when you get in trouble, you will get World War III-type headlines in the paper about you.”
