Janet Yellen, who served as chair of the Federal Reserve under Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, will be the featured speaker on Wednesday at a Macomb Community College event where participants will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the current economy.
The title of the evening forum is “The economy and the 2020 election: If the economy is doing so well, why are so many struggling?”
The gathering, sponsored by the Brookings Institution research center in Washington, will feature a “fireside chat” with Yellen and three economic experts: Molly Kinder of the Brookings Institution; Sandy Baruah, President and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce; and John Paul Rea, deputy county executive of Macomb County.

The discussion will be moderated by David Wessel, director of The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy. Yellen and Wessel, along with Kinder, are scholars at Brookings, which has served as one of Washington’s foremost think tanks for several decades.
Yellen, the first woman to serve as Fed chief, served in that position from 2014-18. Her prior roles included Fed vice chair (2010-14) and chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton.
Brookings is partnering with MCC for this dialogue, the first event in its nationwide “Policy 2020” election series that will focus on the state of the U.S. economy.
The forum, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Lorenzo Cultural Center, located on the MCC center campus in Clinton Township at M-59 and Garfield Road. Those planning to attend must register in advance at LorenzoCulturalCenter.com.
