In Washington, Democratic lawmakers rail against budget cuts proposed by Republican leadership. In Lansing, Democratic lawmakers rail against budget cuts proposed by the Republican governor.
Why not combine the two into one big anti-GOP effort?
That seems to be the idea behind an event planned for Monday in Warren. U.S. Rep. Sander Levin will be joined by several fellow Democrats who serve in the Legislature to “outline the scope” of funding reductions for education proposed at the state and federal level.
Those scheduled to attend include state Sen. Steve Bieda, state Reps. Lesia Liss and Jon Switalski, and five school superintendents.
According to Levin, the GOP is pushing for steep cuts to Head Start pre-school programs, K-12 funding for “at-risk” kids, and Pell grants that help finance college tuition for low-income students.
The state cuts include a $470-per-pupil for K-12 and a reduction of between 15 and 22 percent for universities.
I wonder if the Dems will put forward alternative proposals that match the Republicans in deficit reduction.
