The 2020 U.S. Census numbers released late Thursday show that Macomb Township in Macomb County grew faster than any other city or township in Michigan over the past decade.

The data show that the township grew by 12,083 residents, continuing the community’s track record over the past 25 years as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the state.

Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano boasted, “Year after year, we repeat as the champions when it comes to attracting new residents. People are voting with their moving vans because Macomb Township is the best value in the state when it comes to good schools, safe neighborhoods, and quality of life at the lowest tax rate around.”

The township’s population grew by 15 percent since the last census, from 79, 580 to 91,663. Overall, seven of Michigan’s top 10 growth communities were located in southeast Michigan: Macomb Township, Dearborn, Novi, Ann Arbor, Lyon Township, Canton Township and Troy.

On a percentage basis, Lyon Township in western Oakland County was the top community in the southeast Michigan region with 60 percent growth. Until recently a township with lots of wide-open spaces, Lyon saw its population jump from 14,545 to 23,271.

The fastest-growing city in the region was Hamtramck, posting a 26.8 percent population increase, largely due to an influx of Asian and Middle Eastern immigrants.

Macomb County as a whole posted a gain of 40,239 residents for a population of 881,217, a 5 percent increase.

Viviano said he still sees plenty of room for growth in his township. Several new subdivisions have been under construction since last year in the middle of the township, all located on or near 22 Mile Road.

In fact, township officials say the new 2020 census data is already outdated. The township has issued 298 new certificates of occupancy since the census ended in October of 2020, plus 321 building permits since this January, adding an estimated 685 new residents in just the last few months alone.
