In an e-mail message over the weekend to loyal partisans, Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer said the party’s petition drive to derail Gov. Snyder’s budget collected 6,000 signatures in its first 24 hours.
“But we’re far from done. Help us keep the momentum going and let’s stop Gov. Snyder’s disastrous budget proposal,” Brewer told the faithful. “Can you get 10 of your friends to sign the petition? Forward this message to at least 10 friends and relatives and let’s hit 10,000 by the end of Friday.”
Brewer is clearly trying to tap into the increasingly coarse opposition to Snyder’s mix of tax and spending changes. Though he surely can’t sway enough Republican lawmakers to torpedo the governor’s budget plan, Brewer hopes to stir the pot in advance of the 2012 election season.
“We can’t let Gov. Snyder hurt our kids by drastically cutting public education,” he said.”We can’t let Gov. Snyder give a $2 billion tax cut to big corporations, big banks, insurance companies and CEOs, paid for by raising taxes by $900 million on our seniors. We can’t let Gov. Snyder eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which helps many workers in Michigan stay out of poverty.”
