On his way to cruising toward election as the Macomb County treasurer, Derek Miller, D-Warren, a former county assistant prosecutor and state House member, has decided that the way to raise funds for his coming campaign is to schedule and publicize a “Guys Night Out” at a friend’s house.
At least he didn’t coronate the party as a “Boy’s Night Out.” Still, I wonder how many women will be offended by this men-only approach.
For a young man who hit the political jackpot – born into one of Macomb County’s most storied families – I wonder why he would engage in this frivolity. Miller is the son of former state Senate Minority Leader Art Miller and grandson of Warren’s first mayor, Art Miller, and longtime county clerk Edna Miller. All three enjoy a legacy as respected public servants.
Less than a year after winning office as a state representative, Derek Miller was handed the county treasurer post after the incumbent, Ted Wahby, suddenly died. If not for the Miller family connections, he probably would have never received such an appointment.

So, why engage in a 1950s type of fundraising party? All that is missing is some shenanigans — maybe female “exotic dancers,” as they used to be labeled — and this event could be the “Mad Men” party of the political season. Regardless, female voters are likely to be turned off.
Recently married, Miller may not fully recognize the distinction between a bachelor’s party and a fundraiser for a highly professional, responsible position such as treasurer of a county approaching 1 million in population.
But let’s hope he soon realizes the difference.
