Across the political spectrum, men are much more favorable toward the legalization of marijuana in Michigan than women, according to a new poll.

The survey by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA found overall support for a law to legalize pot at 53 percent, with 45 percent opposed. But perhaps the more interesting story here is the substantial gender gap that arises on the topic of toking.

Among Democrats, 72 percent of men support the proposal, which is currently the subject of a statewide petition drive, while 64 percent of women voters said they were in favor. On the Republican side, 46 percent of men were on board with the idea while only about one-third (32 percent) of GOP women supported it.

But the biggest divide is among independent voters – men in support, 60 percent; women, just 43 percent.

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said that the March 19-22 poll shows an overall three percentage point gain from a December 2014 survey he conducted that found a 50-46 percent bare majority  would vote “yes” on a ballot proposal to legalize pot.

The current survey, commissioned by Michigan NORML, the Michigan Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, represents a six-point gain from the 47 percent plurality in a Sept. 2013 poll who favored one of four legalization proposals that were being pushed at that time.
