As the campaign enters its final stretch, vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine will rally the Democratic troops at a union hall in Warren on Sunday.

Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Kaine will speak to the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights with an emphasis on get-out-the-vote efforts. He will be joined by fellow Sen. Gary Peters and Doug McCarron, the Carpenters and Millwrights union president.

The event marks the Virginia senator’s first trip to all-important Macomb County, where one recent poll showed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump with a sizeable lead. Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, spoke to a sold-out crowd in Shelby Township earlier this month at the Macomb Republican’s Lincoln Dinner.

That appearance drew more than 900 people. The Sunday rally with Kaine is anticipated to draw a crowd of 500. The prospect of Trump’s blue-collar campaign messages stealing away Clinton voters has been a big concern of union and party officials for months.

The union hall is located at 23401 Mound Road, north of Nine Mile Road, across the street from the General Motors Powertrain Plant. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the speakers will take the stage at 6 p.m.

The event is open to the public.
