Next, after right-wingers spent years making gay marriage a
hot-button issue, one that most Democratic officials could never admit supporting,
President Obama comes out in favor of same-sex marriage and the response is – near
silence. I was amazed. No public outcry, at least outside of the Bible Belt.
So, the GOP leadership left it alone. A glaring example of the public being
ahead of the politicians.

Republican purists by issuing an executive order that eases up on deportations
of young illegal immigrants. The order is similar to the DREAM Act that was
blocked in Congress by the GOP. The result? No public backlash. The first poll
taken since the Obama decision shows about two-thirds of Americans agree with
the policy. More importantly from a strategic standpoint, two-thirds of
independents also back the decision.

One addendum: Maybe the Michigan Republicans should stop
taking their cues from the national party. The decision to block Democratic state
Reps. Lisa Brown and Barb Byrum from speaking on the House floor due to the use
of the words vagina and vasectomy was stupid and unprecedented. Worse yet, in
an election year it gave the Michigan GOP a huge black eye – earning so much
national coverage that the Republicans’ vaginaphobia became the butt of jokes
by the late-night comedians.
