Michigan Congressman Mike Bishop has made the Top 10 list of the most “tortured” attempts by Republican lawmakers at answering the question: Do you endorse Donald Trump for president?
The Washing Post’s “The Fix” blog compiled the list, relying on the many disingenuous flip-flops and examples of campaign-speak that members of Congress have resorted to in expressing varying degrees of support for Trump. In Bishop’s case, he only indicated that he may favor a Future-Trump.
Bishop, a Rochester Republican, is facing a potentially difficult re-election run against former TV star Melissa Gilbert, a Democrat. The incumbent clearly is nervous about being tagged with some of Trump’s more outrageous comments.
Here’s how The Fix describes his entry at No. 10 on their list:
Rep. Mike Bishop, a freshman from Michigan, is on our list for publicly expressing the desire for the problem of Trump and his positions to just go away. When a Politico reporter asked if he’d share a stage with Trump, he said he probably wouldn’t, adding: “I’m hoping that if he is the nominee, he’ll modulate, he’ll be presidential, and I won’t have to defend his words.”
The folks at The Fix also point out that those on Capitol Hill who say they support Trump but will not endorse him are mangling the English language.
“Lawmakers who are “doing the support-but-not-endorse two-step,” they wrote, fail to understand that “that’s a distinction without a difference.”
