Michigan key in Trump campaign registration drive

Michigan stands as a key priority in the 2020 Trump campaign’s voter registration drive that starts today with training programs for 6,000 volunteers in more than a dozen battleground states.

The “National Week of Training” seeks to register President Trump supporters who are sitting on the sidelines, which would give the campaign the opportunity to expand their opportunities on the electoral map in next year’s election.

The Trump team is holding 25 training events in Florida alone, according to The Hill, and Michigan ranks second with 20 sessions. Four other crucial states — Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and North Carolina — will have at least 12.

In an email seeking volunteers sent earlier this week by the Michigan Republican Party to GOP loyalists, the party said the training will “teach you how you can do your part to help your neighbors register to vote … Grassroots leaders like you will be preparing to engage their fellow conservatives and register new Republican voters. We need Michigan to step up and do its part.”

With the president trailing in national polls to leading Democratic candidates, such as former vice president Joe Biden and Sens. Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the Trump campaign is targeting 14 states for the July 19-25 training efforts. Some of the activists who volunteer could later be brought on as paid field organizers.

The project is overseen by Trump Victory, a joint operation comprised of the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and state Republican parties.
