Lucido
False claims of endorsements have been flying around in the state House race between Pete Lucido and Stan Grot, with the Romeo Area Tea Party the latest group to weigh in.Last month, Lucido supporters pointed out that Grot
falsely claimed on a campaign flyer that he was endorsed by the NRA.
Grot
The Lucido
backers also objected to Grot’s reference to a “100% pro-life record” as
the former Sterling Heights City Council member and county commissioner has
never held an office that dealt with abortion issues. Grot is endorsed by
Right to Life of Michigan, but so is Lucido.
Here is a notice that was recently mailed to NRA members
by the association’s PAC:

No Endorsements by the NRA in Michigan House District 36 Primary Election This Year
Recently you may have seen a campaign flyer or received a postcard by the “Stan Grot for State Representative” campaign that includes a bullet point stating, “Defend Second Amendment (right to bear arms).  Endorsed by NRA.”  The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) has not endorsed any candidate in House District 36 for the 2014 primary election.

Both Republican candidates in this primary election, Stan Grot and Peter Lucido, submitted responses to our state candidate questionnaire and each received an “AQ” rating from the NRA-PVF.

An “AQ” designates a “pro-gun candidate whose rating is based solely on the candidate’s responses to the NRA-PVF Candidate Questionnaire and who does not have a voting record on Second Amendment issues.”

This morning, the Romeo Area Tea Party sent a message to its membership after a confusing email went out that suggested the tea party group had turned its back on Grot. A considerable amount of Grot’s backing – for the House seat and for his bid to take control of the Macomb County GOP – comes from the RATP.
The email that caused a bit of a furor came from Linda Kelly, a former RATP activist who is now an avid Lucido supporter.
Here is the response:
_________________________________________________

To all RATP members:
Earlier this week, some of you may have received an email
from Linda Kelly concerning an endorsement for the 36th District House of
Representative seat.
The email spoke very favorably regarding Peter J. Lucido
who is campaigning for office in the upcoming August 5th Primary
election.  In this email there was an attachment called:

“RATP Endorsement…..docx”
Whether intentionally, or unintentionally, this file name
makes it appear that the Romeo Area Tea Party is endorsing Peter J. Lucido for
the office of State Representative.  This is causing a lot of confusion
with those who received it and because it is so misleading, we are now forced to
publicly respond to the situation.  The Romeo Area Tea Party has
never made an endorsement of any candidate running for any office.
The Philosophy of our Mission statement states very
clearly: “To remain a non-partisan
organization that recognizes and reviews government
policies…..our philosophy is to
minimize government control and maximize personal
responsibility.”

While we do provide information on candidates and we will take a position on
certain political issues, we do not promote, or endorse any candidate for any
political office.

Please be aware that, at one time, Linda Kelly was an
active member of RATP, but resigned in November of 2011 and since that time has
had no affiliation with our Group

Furthermore, please disregard any messaging that you may hear from any
candidate, or individual indicating that the RATP has endorsed someone.
It is simply untrue.
Sincerely,
Romeo Area Tea Party – Leadership
